Many Florida homeschooling families prefer to enroll in a homeschool Umbrella School, which is a non-traditional private school. The benefits of homeschooling through a homeschool Umbrella school include:

• Autonomy
• Oversight by a private entity (often a homeschooling family)
• No involvement with the school district
• Freedom of materials and methods

In addition, in many cases Umbrella schools offer services that can benefit your homeschooling journey, such as curriculum recommendations, transcripts, and even a diploma. Check with the schools you are interested in to see what services they offer.

As you saw in the chart contrasting public and Umbrella (private) homeschooling, there can be both advantages and disadvantages to either approach, depending on your goals and philosophy. There are also differences in procedures since different laws govern private schools and home education programs.

Umbrella School students are not counted in the home education statistics compiled by the state of Florida. Because Florida makes no distinction among types of private schools, children homeschooled in this fashion are legally considered to be private school students.
